As for it sucking ... Well, it is boring, il give you that! This is not a place for people under 30! Yesterday I must have walked what seemed like 2 miles just to find a bar/pub but to no avail ... I asked teens and students but non of them knew where to get booze... When more teens spend time in book shops and hair saloons then bars etc you know you are far from home.

Further more, the main attractions are boring ... I mean I study law and history but there is a point where temples are just dull after a while and museums are nice but when there is nothing else ! And alishan was really disappointing also.

However, taiwan gets a rough ride ... A lot of people do not come due to rumours that English is non existent but in Taipei nearly every one I have spoken to has a basic command of English, signs are in English and getting around is easy.

People are very friendly, on the whole, and as I come from London this Is just alien so is nice ... I'd rather someone show fake kindness then simply tell me to piss off

I have read every post in this string and find myself confused. I have worked with many dozen Taiwanese firms over the years and have done millions as well as small business and never have I been cheated. I respect the people and their ways. I will add that I can not speak chinese and that has never been a problem. I have a home in Taiwan and stay there about 5 months a year. My Taiwanese girlfriend will only consider comming to the US in the future (after her parents are gone and do not depend on her to support them). I have traveled to more than 30 countries and can state Taiwan is the only place I have been treated as a human and not an unwanted intruder. Taiwan is my home as much as the US. Everyone is entitled to their own thinking just as everyone is capable of leaving a place and people they do not like.
I'm an American and I think Taiwan is a great place to visit. Taiwanese are friendly and the food is good. The people teaching English here are generally losers who have some weird fascination with Asian women and couldn't get laid back home, or they were too inept to get a job back home. Then there are the ones who claim they are interested in the language or the culture, but that is just a cover for the creepy fascination with Asian girls. I mean really, who would ever aspire to teach English in a developed country for not that great of a salary?
i see pros and cons opinions about taiwan, but please, be objective, not subjective. Taiwan does not suck: Everything has its limitation, everything might not be perfect, and it is all a matter of perspective. For thos people who says Taiwan sucks, I can only see their mind is full of hatred, grudge. They are being childish, for an adult would see in a more objective manner.

It's all part of culture shock and the inability to adapt. This is how both ignorance and racism is born. I went there originally for only 1 year & left. I ended up returning a few months later and stayed another 10 years. So this is what i have to say: You wrote, "It smells bad" It smells bad compared to what/where? Smells that u r not used to will smell bad to u. The smells of an Italian kitchen may appeal to you while that of an Indian one or Asian one will not. So it only smells bad to you and not others.

True Taipei is often rainy cloudy but not the rest of Taiwan. HOt? Well yeah, so is every other country in hot climates but at least it has a winter with perfect weather. "the pollution turns every surface black in about 45 minutes." pollution is indeed a problem, but that is the unfortunate truth of a few hundred cities in the world--LA, Mexico city, Rome, etc. - "They drive like the worst possible way" Driving is also something that changes style from place to place. Have you ever driven in Lagos, Naples Italy, Barcelona, NY? If they are so bad why in all those years did I witness so few accidents (usually involving scooters). "they have no business ethics" Who in business has ethics? - "carry grudges" yes many do but many don't. "its full of cockroaches" along with NY and many other cities.
The reason why this place sucks to you says a lot about you. The problem is not Taiwan it is you (along with your attitude). Take a look at yourself and ask yourself why you had problems and I didn't? People will not behave nicely or with trust if u hate them or if u r untrustworthy. Think positive, be positive, share and give and it will make your life and those around you a much better place to live in. Choose not to do this and you find yourself where you are now--a place of hate: definitely not a good place to be.

The environment is,pretty good here. schools, hospitals, subway, nightlife and many other things are very good.Sure there are bad places or sides of Taiwan, but all the countries in the world has same bad stuff. Wow, I have read over most of this thread and I am shocked by the general ignorance displayed by most of the posters. It's unfortunate, in this age of internet anonymity, that people choose to write stupid, thoughtless comments. With that said, I am an American living in Taiwan. I have been here for 2.5 years, and I generally feel very frustrated with the culture here. If you ask me, "Why don't you just leave?" I would say that actually, I am interested in learning about a culture that is so different from my own. So despite my frustration, that is the reason why I continue to stay. After a couple of years here, I am slowly learning more and more about the culture. For example, it seems like Taiwanese people have two sides to their behavior, or "two faces". On the one hand, if you are talking to someone in person, they are typically very polite and friendly, and generally very interesting to speak with. On the other hand, they also have an ability to display shocking rudeness and disrespect and discourtesy toward others. And it is this behavior that makes me often hate living here.

My main gripe is with the driving. I live in Tainan. People do not obey traffic laws here. That, in itself, is not bad. However, the result of this is that people tend to do whatever they want to do, regardless of whether or not it puts someone else's safety in jeopardy. Every day I get angry and the rudeness and disrespect that I see here. It's shocking, and over time it has made me hate this country. When I first came here, I thought, 'wow, this is great, everyone is so kind and friendly, and they help you even if you can't speak Chinese.' Unfortunately, now after two years I have slowly discovered that the "real" Taiwan lies beneath these external facades of friendliness.

It's not just the driving that bothers me. It's also the lack of integrity that exists within the realm of business. Taiwanese people seem to have very little business ethics. All that matters to them is money, and they will burn you if it is in their own interest. This is really disheartening, and the result of this is that I have grown to the point where I do not trust Taiwanese people anymore. I do not think that they have any business ethics, and that is sad. People seem to be so greedy here that that they have no concern for others, outside of their families or closest friends. As a foreigner, I fall outside of that, and I have learned through experience that people will lie straight to your face if money is concerned.

I really wish that I didn't feel this way about Taiwan. I really want to like Taiwan. But I feel so disappointed in the culture here. I think that people are very rude and selfish and don't care about anyone but themselves. People do not seem to have any morals or ethics here, and it makes me sad because I do not want to live in a place like that. Recently I have been trying to reach out to more Taiwanese people and try to talk to them and understand why it is that people act this way. I don't want to hate Taiwan, but every day the Taiwanese people give me reasons to hate this place. I really wish it were different.
I agree with the general sentiments although I am a female living in Taiwan so I am not a foreigner trying to sleep with the women. I feel like the general sentiment of the people seeing a foreigner are mixed with interest and those(don't know if it's because I am not fluent in the language) of disgust and or jealousy. To be honest, why would I learn the language previously if they are paying me to teach English in their country? They dont need me to teach Chinese nor do I need to know Chinese to teach English. I've walked into shops and women have given me looks of disgust and have been treated rudely for no reason at all. I smile and I'm greeted with a look of coldness. I've had money thrown at me at the bank for no just cause. I dont expect to be treated as a superior just with some human dignity. Yes, Ive lived all over the world for long periods of time so I am accustomed to different cultures. Ive given respect to both women and men and there just seems to be a lack in return. Not to mention that I was lied to about a job after flying around the world for this said job. I(attention foreigners:Goto Korea to teach. Well in all honesty, Taiwan can be a tricky place for anyone who wasn't born and bred within the culture, but there's a line between having issues with the country/culture/people and being a complete bigot, and most of the bashers on this forum have definitely crossed the line.

They aren't. Ask any Taiwanese student studying here. They aren't. I had a Taiwanese friend studying at UW. Bus drivers closed the doors on before they could board. People who work at stores refuse to talk to them and throw their change at them. People say racist shit to them all the time.

Now you all get to experience what it is like to be a minority.
Taiwan gets some things wrong, but they get many things right too. Some asshat said something about being ripped off and business ethics. I think that is kinda bullshit because most everything is very cheap, and you can haggle and argue over price (or else they will rip you off because you are stupid).

The things I like:
-They know how to do cable TV and for so cheap. It is so much better, more entertaining than the US $100/month crap.
-They also know how to price for stuff. Food is so affordable at shops. You could eat out every day in taiwan for $10/day. And it is good food if you know how to find it.
-I like the fact that if you do get a parking ticket, they don't try to fuck you over. Same goes for other fees.
-Their nationalized health care is also so much better than our ridiculously-stupid expensive healthcare.
-Other professionals are better than most US professionals and for much cheaper. Their dentists for instance, or optometrists (you won't get that "one or two, one or two" bullshit; they actually measure your eyes using a series of lenses)
- Taiwanese girls are generally not overweight. Some are extraordinarily beautiful. Their attitudes are generally better than many girls in the US who have low IQs and go to the club every week and say they just want to drink with their girlfriends but they actually end up getting railed by the first low IQ douchebag that walks by with his hollister shirt and jersey shore haircut.
